RED SEA Northern Wrecks - Scuba Diving Tour

RED SEA Northern Wrecks - Scuba Diving Tour

The Red Sea, specifically the area exiting the Gulf of Suez, has may coral reefs that sit just below the surface and lie largely invisible to shipping.
Prior to modern navigation techniques and GPS the busy trade route through the Suez Canal meant lots of unlucky ships foundered on the reefs.
They are excellent dive sites, with lots of marine life making them their homes – often like swimming in an aquarium.

This video documents a brilliant β€˜Get Wrecked’ Red Sea scuba diving trip aboard the Whirlwind, part of the Tornado Fleet, and organised by Scubatravel.
21 dives, 13 wrecks, 6 days!
Fantastic hospitality on board and great guides Val and Hassan, with excellent detailed historical briefings by Mike Ward.
26th September to 1st October 2022, shortly before COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh.

It is very much an experiment as I try to learn underwater videography, photography, video editing and basic animation on the fly. Feel free to comment, offer suggestions and advice 😊

Filmed using GoPro Hero 7 mounted atop a Seafrogs housing containing an Olympus Tough TG-6 compact camera, with Weefine WFL02 24mm wet lens. Shoot tray and arms with value Amazon bought unbranded video lights/dive torch.
Edited using Davinci Resolve 17, installed on an ancient Macbook Pro 2013.

After a check dive at Beacon Rock we dived the:
- SS Carnatic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Carnatic
A sail and steam cargo vessel sunk in 1869. After sitting on the reef for a day – crazily the captain had not ordered to abandon her – she broke her back, resulting in the loss of 31 lives.
- MV Salem Express https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Salem_Express
This was a ferry carrying pilgrims and workers from Egypt to Mecca. In 1991 she just clipped the reef enough to knock open her bow doors, sinking her in 3 minutes.
There was a huge loss of life – officially about 500 but likely many more unregistered passengers lost.
- MV El/Al Khfhain (formerly Ulster Queen) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Ulster_Queen_(1967)
Sunk in 2005, a roll on – roll off ferry, similar to the Salem Express, capsized on tow after a fire. No loss of life.
- MV Minia/Miniya/Minya https://www.redseawreckproject.com/dive-sites/e-red-sea-wreck-diving-database/el-minya/
Russian built minesweeper, sunk by Israeli bomb during the 6 day war of 1967, lies on her port side and has intact cannons. Also a nearby small fishing vessel.
- MV Kimon M https://www.dailydive.com/dive-sites/egypt/kimon-m
Cargo ship sunk in 1978, carrying lentils. Bow is smashed up but the stern, with huge propeller and rudder are still intact.
- MV Chrisoula K https://www.dailydive.com/dive-sites/egypt/the-chrisoula-k
German built cargo vessel, carrying clay tiles, sunk in 1981.
- MV Giannis D https://www.redseawreckproject.com/dive-sites/g-red-sea-wreck-diving-database/giannis-d/
Japanese built cargo vessel sunk in 1983 after hitting a reef and now sits in 2 halfs.
- An unnamed barge (remains of) and surrounding reef at the anchorage near Rosalie Moller
- MV Rosalie Moller https://www.dailydive.com/dive-sites/egypt/rosalie-moller
The explosion of the Thistlegorm lit up the area so well that the pilots could see Rosalie nearby. So they came back 2 days later and laid her to rest on the seabed too. Deeper and carrying coal so is less attractive to dive than her sister vessel.
- SS Ulysses https://www.redseawreckproject.com/dive-sites/u-red-sea-wreck-diving-database/ulysses/
A sail and steam cargo vessel sunk in 1887, lies on her port side. Not much left.
- SS Kingston https://fordivers.com/diving-sites/kingston-wreck-diving-red-sea
Iron sail and steam cargo vessel hit the corner of Shag Rock in January 1881. Rudder and prop still intact - the rest is an amazing reef.
- MV Thistlegorm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Thistlegorm
A freighter carrying supplies to the British army in northern Egypt, bombed at anchor while awaiting transit through the Suez Canal. Her cargo is still intact – if a little rusty – MG vehicles, motorbikes, jeeps, trucks, trains, plane parts, boxes of rifles, 4” and 15” live shells and loads of miscellaneous unidentifiables.
- SS Dunraven https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Dunraven
Sail and steam cargo vessel sunk in 1876 while the captain and his wife were arguing!
With large hull plates slumped inside, with boilers still intact, she makes a great wreck to swim through.
